Former Stars assistant coach Steve Spott talks Dallas exit in podcast appearance

Published 11 hours ago2 minute read

Former Dallas Stars assistant coach Steve Spott offered news details on his departure from North Texas in a recent appearance on NESN’s The Hockey Hub podcast.

Spott, who is joining new head coach Marco Sturm’s staff for the Boston Bruins, coached three years in Dallas under former head coach Pete DeBoer. He was in charge of the team’s power play during its run of three consecutive Western Conference finals appearances.

Soon after DeBoer’s firing, Stars general manager Jim Nill said he planned to keep the same assistant coaches, including Spott. However, Spott’s recent comments seem to paint a different picture.

When asked about his interviews with the Bruins, Spott said it was “quick” process.

“I met with Jim Nill and our management in Dallas and they decided that they were gonna go to a different direction, which I understand. Then from there, it just became what’s what’s going to be next, ” Spott said.

This statement seemingly contradicts Nill’s original assertion that the Stars intended to keep assistant coaches while looking to fill the vacancy left by DeBoer.

Instead, the Stars now have to find a new head coach and someone to run the team’s power play.
