Former Ohio State basketball star lands in new role alongside No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg in NBA free agency

Ohio State basketball hasn’t produced a ton of NBA talent in recent years, but two former Buckeye guards continue to make their mark at the professional level with long careers.

Veteran point guards Mike Conley and D’Angelo Russell are still going strong in the NBA, with both having built successful careers. Russell just added another chapter to his journey by signing with his fifth NBA team.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Dallas Mavericks have signed former Ohio State point guard D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $13 million deal. Russell spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets, marking his second stint with the franchise.

Now entering his 11th NBA season, Russell has already earned over $175 million in career salary. He’s approaching $200 million in total earnings—an impressive feat for the former Buckeye star.

Russell joins a Mavericks team expected to feature Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson in the backcourt, with rising star Cooper Flagg and veteran Anthony Davis anchoring the frontcourt—when healthy. Irving suffered a torn ACL during the playoffs and is not expected to be ready at the start of the season. Russell gives Dallas a reliable starting option in the meantime.

During his lone season at Ohio State, Russell averaged 19.3 points, 5.0 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. He was named an All-American and went on to be selected No. 2 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft.
