Jason Kidd already has a solution to Dallas Mavericks’ point guard problem with uncertainty over Kyrie Irving’s return

Nico Harrison has been on the receiving end of criticism from many around the NBA world because of his decision to trade Luka Doncic away from the Dallas Mavericks.

Things went from bad to worse after trading Doncic as the team suffered a lot of injuries with Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II all going down hurt.

However, they found some form of joy when it was announced that the Mavericks would have the number one pick in the draft, despite having only a 1.8% chance.

There were no questions about whom the team was going to draft first, as Cooper Flagg was available, and a player of his talent on the Mavericks would instantly make them a difficult side to beat.

The 18-year-old had his introductory press conference as a Mavericks player on Friday, and it was revealed that Jason Kidd already has big plans for the talented Maine native.

Among the many issues Mavs have, one of them is the point guard position, which is currently shorthanded with Irving out injured.

The nine-time All-Star signed a brilliant three-year deal that will help save some money for the Mavs, but his return to the franchise is unknown as he went down with an ACL injury towards the end of last season.

While the team is looking for options in that position, Kidd floated the challenge of playing their rookie sensation Flagg in that position.

“Just from past experiences being in this seat, being one, but just sitting here listening to him, isn’t it incredible, I mean we’re talking about an 18-year-old who has all the right answers and is talking about working out after this,” said Kidd.

“When you talk about his gift, he’s a basketball player and he is a winner, I thought he answered the question about position perfectly, because I don’t look at the position.

“I want to put him at the point guard, I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts being able to run the show, being able to play the two, play the three, he’s comfortable playing that, but we want to push and I think he’s gonna respond in a positive way,” he added.

LeBron James pointed out how Flagg was blessed with the virtue of having Hall of Famers around him.

The likes of Davis, Irving and Klay Thompson have all been in the league for over a decade and won championships.

While Flagg certainly has the game to add quality to the roster, he will also be able to pick a lot up from his legendary teammates.

Speaking about playing in a veteran stacked team, Flagg said: “Like I said earlier, just being a sponge, those guys have so much knowledge, they’ve been through so much and they have so much experience that it’s going to be an incredible opportunity for me to learn and grow under them.”

The Mavs’ starting five when Irving returns to action looks fiery and will certainly be something that will scare the other teams in the Western Conference.

Flagg averaged 19.2 PPG, 7.5 RPG and was also a presence on defense with 1.4 blocks.

He will be looking to bring all of that to the Mavs and help them to a championship in his time there.
