Former Maverick has the perfect blueprint to replace Jason Kidd in Dallas one day
This past Wednesday, it was reported that the New York Knicks have shown interest in hiring Jason Kidd as their next coach after firing Tom Thibodeau.
With Kidd currently being under contract with the Dallas Mavericks, a trade would likely have to take place for the Knicks to acquire Kidd. On top of that, the Mavericks would also have to give the Knicks approval to even interview Kidd, and New York definitely plans on reaching out to Dallas.
The last time a coach was traded was in 2014. That coach, coincidentally, was Jason Kidd. The Brooklyn Nets traded Kidd to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks.
Former Maverick, Tim Legler, could become a dark horse candidate for the Mavericks coaching position if Coach Kidd ended up in New York.
Legler is currently an NBA Analyst for ESPN, but is also a co-host of the ALL NBA Podcast.
When listening to Legler on air or on podcasts, it's quite obvious how smart he is about the Xs and Os of the game of basketball. Legler is also known for giving some of the best in-game breakdowns in NBA television industry.
Legler is able to explain complex basketball analysis in easy terms to people, which is another potential asset he could deliver to his Mavericks team.
An additional bonus of Legler is that he knows how to deal with intense environments. Whether it's being live on ESPN with their broadcast crew, or even going back to the 1990s when he was on the court in the NBA, Legler can handle intensity.
A perfect comparison to Legler's potential of becoming a head coach in the NBA is former podcaster and ESPN analyst, JJ Redick.
After Redick retired from the NBA, he was the host of a podcast called the Old Man and the Three, as well as a co-host of the Mind the Game podcast with LeBron James. Redick was also doing in-game and studio analysis for ESPN.
Shortly after this, Redick became a candidate for the head coaching job with the Charlotte Hornets and the Los Angeles Lakers. Redick eventually was hired by the Lakers and led them to a 50-win season and the third seed in the Western Conference in his first year.
Redick, just like Legler, was very well known for his in-depth basketball analysis while he was on air with ESPN and recording his podcasts.
No one is saying that the Mavericks should flat out and go hire Legler to be their head coach, but they should keep him in consideration for a job on their staff if Coach Kidd were to head to New York.
