Former Islanders defenseman Zdeno Chara one of eight Hockey Hall of Fame inductees
Zdeno Chara can now say he started and ended his Hall of Fame career with the Islanders.
“Big Z” – the Slovakian defenseman was 6-9, 250 pounds – was announced on Tuesday as one of eight inductees to comprise Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.
Joe Thornton, Alexander Mogilny, Duncan Keith, Jennifer Botterill and Brianna Decker were also selected as player inductees and longtime Boston University coach Jack Parker and Daniele Sauvageau were elected as builders. Sauvageau, a Montreal native who participated in seven Olympics as a coach, general manager and consultant, is the first woman selected as a builder.
Chara spent five of his 24 NHL seasons with the Islanders, who selected him in the third round in 1996.
He played four seasons for them before being traded to the Senators in 2001 and returned as a free agent in 2021-22 to finish his career. He compiled 209 goals, 471 assists and 2,085 penalty minutes in 1,680 regular-season games, the most ever for an NHL defenseman. As Bruins captain from 2006-2020, he won the Norris Trophy in 2009 and the Stanley Cup in 2011.
Botterill, a three-time Olympic gold medalist for Team Canada, also served a stint as a MSG Networks studio analyst for Islanders’ games.
Andrew Gross joined Newsday in 2018 to cover the Islanders. He began reporting on the NHL in 2003 and has previously covered the Rangers and Devils. Other assignments have included the Jets, St. John’s and MLB.
