Former All-Big 12 Basketball Star Arrested Following Armed Robbery
A former All-Big 12 basketball star and NBA draft pick has been arrested in Kansas City with his brother for an armed robbery that was reported in Tulsa.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Thursday, March 6, revealed that Marcus and Malik Denmon, 34 and 29, respectively, were arrested in Kansas City on charges related to an armed robbery in Tulsa.
Marcus grew up in Kansas City, Missouri where was a three-star prospect who committed to the University of Missouri on August 20th, 2007. He developed into a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 selection in 2011 and 2012 and was a consensus second-team All-American in 2012. He was then drafted 59th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 2012, but ended up playing overseas from 2012 to 2024.
With 107 victories, teammates Denmon, Kim English, Laurence Bowers, and Steve Moore won more games than any senior class in Mizzou basketball history.
Documents filed with the Tulsa County District Court indicated that in January, law enforcement officials were called to the Cascata Apartments off E. 79th and S. Mingo Rd. in Tulsa, with reports of an ambush.
When first responders arrived, the victim told them she had been preparing to travel to a friend’s bachelorette party in Kansas City when she was ambushed by two men. The pair drove away in a white Malibu after they took more than $16,000 in cash and belongings from the woman. A string of suspicious deposits were also found to have been made at Kansas City ATMs between January 17th and 26th.
Investigators noted that surveillance footage from a nearby hotel revealed the brothers to be the occupants of the Malibu in question. The vehicle was found to be a rental from Platte City, Misouri, near Kansas City, that the two got tinted before their arrival in Tulsa. However, court records indicated that when the rental car was returned by Marcus, the windows were no longer tinted.
The Denmons brothers have been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon in Oklahoma. A Missouri judge ordered their extradition on Thursday.
Most recently, Marcus coached teams through Kansas City Elite Basketball Academy.
