Migori Elders Condemn Political Clashes in Awendo and Suna East

Elders in Migori County, Kenya, have strongly condemned the recent outbreaks of violence in Awendo and Suna East Sub-Counties. These incidents, occurring within a two-week span, involved clashes between supporters of rival political factions, resulting in property damage and injuries.
Sylvester Owich, chairman of the Sakwa elders’ forum, expressed the community's deep disappointment, stating, "We are unhappy with the political fracas and violence that was witnessed." The elders are urging leaders to engage with their supporters to prevent future incidents and to promote peaceful campaigns.
The elders emphasized their desire to prevent further violence and conflict, with Mzee Owich poignantly stating, "We don't want to see our children killing each other." Michael Ogada, another elder, appealed to the youth to resist manipulation and involvement in violent acts, stressing the need for a peaceful county.
The call for peace comes in the wake of specific incidents, including the violence at Sangla Kagak primary school on March 14 and 15, where supporters of Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita clashed. The conflict arose when Governor Ayacko's supporters allegedly blocked the MP's team from holding an event at the venue. Awendo Sub-County Police Commander Mathias Pombo confirmed that two motorcycles were burned during the incident and that investigations are underway.
Additionally, chaos erupted at Migori County Stadium following a football match, as supporters of Governor Ayacko and MP Nyamita clashed once again. The violence forced players and fans of Migori Youth FC and Mofa Football Club to flee for safety, with some sustaining injuries. Police intervened, using teargas and firing into the air to disperse the clashing factions, who damaged a section of the stadium gate.
The elders are urging leaders to act as unifying forces within the county and to prioritize peaceful dialogue and engagement to prevent further escalation of political tensions.
