Flying Eagles hold Junior Harambee Stars, qualify for quarterfinals
Nigeria’s U-20 men’s football team, the Flying Eagles, rallied from 1-2 down to hold a determined Junior Harambee Stars to a 2-2 draw in their last Group B game at the ongoing African U-20 Nations Cup, which is holding in Egypt.
In the game played at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium, Cairo, the Kenyans flew to a sixth-minute lead through Kevin Waganya. Five minutes later, Kparobo Nathaniel Arierhi drew Nigeria level.
Determined to make the most of their last game in the competition, the Kenyans retook the lead in the 68th minute off William Gitamo’s well-taken strike that flew past goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.
However, Skipper Daniel Bameyi saved Nigeria’s blushes from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute to ensure the record champions moved to the quarterfinals of the competition.
The draw means Nigeria finished second behind Morocco, who defeated Tunisia 3-1 to top Group B. Group leaders, Morocco, will remain in Cairo for the quarterfinals against the second-placed team in Group A, which is made up of hosts Egypt, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Tanzania.
Seven-time champions Nigeria will make the trip to Ismailia for their quarterfinal game on Monday, against the second-placed team in Group C, which comprises title-holders Senegal, bitter-rivals Ghana, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.The Flying Eagles’ quarterfinal match on Monday will start at 3.00 p.m. Egypt time (1.00 p.m. Nigeria time) in Ismailia.
