A Florida teenager was transferred to the hospital after she and her family were struck by lightning during a day at the beach.

The victims were suddenly struck by lightning while sitting under an umbrella at St. Pete Beach on Independence Day. The St. Pete Beach Fire Department was the one who responded to the scene after a call regarding an incident that happened around noon local time.

The 17-year-old girl was brought to Tampa General Hospital, and she was transported as a "trauma alert," which means that she may have received life-threatening injuries. At the time of the incident, the teenager was said to be with two adults, who were treated by first responders at the scene but later refused additional medical treatment, according to NBC Miami.

One member of the family, Kyree Mejias, said he was able to witness the lightning strike while he was enjoying the beach with his loved ones. He said that it was very close to them and they could clearly see the flash.

Mejias said that at the time of the incident, they were just trying to take care of the tent, adding that they soon felt the vibration and the shock, forcing everyone to let go. The incident comes as Florida is known as the "lightning strike capital" of the United States.

The region experiences an average of 1.2 million lightning strikes every year and has more incidents per square mile than any other state. In the U.S., lightning strikes roughly 25 million times annually and kills around 20 people every year, the Independent reported.

There was a similar incident that occurred a few weeks ago, which involved 15-year-old Yassin Khalifa. The teenager was struck by lightning while he was under a tree in New York's Central Park, but he was expected to make a full recovery.

At the time, the teen said that after the lightning struck him, he was able to see, but he could not talk or move. He added that it felt like he was locked in his body for a brief moment until he was brought into an ambulance, and people started shaking him.

Another incident involved an Alabama teenager who was left recovering after being struck by lightning while using her cell phone during a storm in Russellville. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Lisa Henderson, said she was just scrolling on Instagram when she was struck by lightning.

The teenage girl said she heard the lightning strike, a loud pop, and then just heard ringing in her ear. She also felt a jolt of electricity run up from her fingers through her arm, which felt like she had stuck a fork in a light socket, as per AccuWeather.
