FG Signs Deal with Chinese Firm to Improve Power Supply

In a move aimed at bolstering Nigeria's electricity transmission infrastructure, the Federal Government has inked a substantial $328.8 million contract with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC). This agreement, a key component of Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), focuses on the rehabilitation and expansion of the nation's electricity transmission network. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to resolving long-standing bottlenecks in the power sector and ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for its citizens.

The contract encompasses Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing (EPC+F) for the development of 330kV and 132kV transmission lines spanning across Nigeria. These lines are designed to enhance grid reliability and alleviate the issue of stranded generation capacity, which has plagued the nation's power sector for years. FGN Power Company, a special purpose vehicle established by the federal government, will oversee the implementation of the PPI, ensuring that the project aligns with the government's objectives.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony in Abuja, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu highlighted the significance of the agreement. He stated that the project would cover 544 kilometers of transmission lines with a substantial load capacity of 7,140 megawatts, encompassing both brownfield and greenfield sites. These critical infrastructure projects are envisioned as the main arteries for delivering increased power from midstream transmission directly to homes, businesses, and industries, thereby strengthening the country's economic foundation.

Adelabu emphasized that enhancing the transmission network is essential to ensure that generated electricity is efficiently delivered to end-users. He reiterated the federal government's commitment, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to providing stable and reliable electricity to Nigerians, underscoring the importance of eliminating obstacles that have hindered progress in the power sector.

Kenny Anuwe, the Managing Director of FGN Power Company, characterized the partnership with CMEC as a strategic move to develop a robust transmission network capable of supporting increased generation capacity. He noted that CMEC's involvement complements the ongoing collaboration with Siemens Energy, which focuses on generation and high-voltage transmission technologies.

Li Xiaoyu, the Vice President of SINOMACH, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its trust in CMEC, emphasizing that the project would play a significant role in improving electricity delivery across the country. The initiative is strategically divided into two priority batches, with priority one including seven brownfield and ten greenfield lines.

The overarching goal of the project is to enhance grid efficiency, prevent stranded capacity, and improve electricity reliability and access for millions of Nigerians. By tackling the bottlenecks in the power value chain, the government aims to foster economic growth, create jobs, and improve the overall quality of life for its citizens. The project represents a tangible demonstration of the federal government's commitment to building a 21st-century-ready power sector.
