Abu Dhabi: H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the ‘Mother of the Nation’, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, has extended her congratulations to Sheikha Nasser Al Nowais on her election as the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikha Fatima emphasized that this achievement is a testament to the UAE leadership’s vision in supporting and empowering Emirati women. This vision, initiated by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and continued by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has established an approach that enhances women’s capabilities and enables their advancement on international platforms.
H.H. praised the role played by Emirati women in various fields, highlighting that this victory reflects the UAE’s strategy in investing in women’s potential. She stressed that this milestone strengthens the UAE’s model of women’s empowerment and is a testament to the ambition of Emirati women to serve their nation and humanity.
Sheikha Fatima noted that Sheikha Al Nowais’s election as the first woman to hold this position is a significant milestone in the UAE’s journey of achievements. It showcases the international confidence in Emirati talent. She expressed confidence in Sheikha Al Nowais’s ability to drive transformative change in the global tourism sector.
She concluded by stating that Emirati women will continue to be vital partners in the development journey and ambassadors of UAE values internationally. This win is part of the successes achieved by Emirati women globally and reflects the UAE’s role in shaping the future with inspiring female role models.
The UNWTO announced that Al Nowais will commence her term in January 2026, with her nomination subject to approval by the UN Tourism General Assembly. This represents a landmark as the first woman leader of UN Tourism in its 50-year history.
Al Nowais, a business leader with over 16 years of experience in global hospitality, serves as Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels and chairs the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s Tourism Working Group. She also holds board positions at the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and Les Roches Hospitality Academy.
