Fans react to what Bristol City's appointment means for Middlesbrough with decision made

Published 1 day ago4 minute read

According to John Percy, Bristol City are set to appoint Gerhard Struber as their new manager, leaving Middlesbrough with a potential free run at Rob Edwards, who is odds-on favourite to take charge at the Riverside.

Bristol City reportedly considered Rob Edwards as a replacement for Liam Manning, but are now set to appoint Gerhard Struber, who impressed in interviews and has Championship experience with Barnsley.

John Percy wrote: “#BristolCity are set to appoint Gerhard Struber as their new head coach. Former FC Köln, Red Bull Salzburg & NY Red Bulls manager has impressed in talks and will be confirmed this week. BCFC one of the most sought-after jobs in the Championship (excellent TG etc)”

Edwards, previously linked with Bristol City, is now a leading candidate for the Middlesbrough managerial role following Michael Carrick’s dismissal.

With two promotions on his record (Forest Green and Luton), Edwards is favoured at 1/5 odds by SkyBet.

Other candidates for Boro include Steve Cooper and Danny Rohl, while Steven Gerrard is not in contention.

Boro’s new manager will aim for promotion after a disappointing 10th-place finish last season.

The club has time to decide, with pre-season starting soon, and retains some of Carrick’s staff, including Alan Fettis and Grant Leadbitter.

FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW MIDDLESBROUGH MANAGER:

Rob Edwards – 1/5
Danny Röhl – 3/1
Steve Cooper – 11/2
Chris Wilder – 9/1
Sean Dyche – 9/1

: Outstanding appointment for them to be fair

: Interesting move by the club. Certainly feel we could have done a lot worse. A little uncertainty with his lack of real experience in England

: Gonna go one of two ways this; either we’re fighting for top 6 again or we’re gonna be scrapping relegation, no in between

: He took over Barnsley bottom of the league and kept them up beating Brentford who won the playoffs that year. I’d say that’s good experience

: Can feel another manager deep dive coming on here 🤔 Did manage Barnsley, and did well under the circumstances/constraints as per @_callumfowler

: He was great! One of the best managers we’ve had in recent years imo. Definitely an interesting appointment that’s for sure!

: Really exciting appointment. Makes a change

: Hopefully this approach will let us see the use of wingers

: Wagner, farke didn’t exactly have experience when they 1st came to England

: We have our man!!!

: Excited by this! As always we’ll need to give him time to put his stamp on things. Expectations may need to be managed a bit.

: I think this could be a really shrewd appointment by Bristol City. Put a lot of the work in place that VI benefitted from during his time at Barnsley. Seemed harsh to be sacked by Koln last season who are a huge club.

: You Austrian reds

: Almost time for the usual moaning to start! Good appointment in my opinion

: Give it a few months we will be sacked, failed at most jobs he’s gone to I want to be here optimistic but I just can’t be unfortunately I don’t see what others do I guess

: Very happy with this. Exciting appointment!

: Love this 😍😍 Will it work? There’s only one way to find #BristolCity

: Bunch of new away days in 26/27 tbf #boro

: Awful news for Boro fans that.

: Quality appointment for Bristol city. So that means we are left with Edwards 😪

: No idea what to think of this. On face of it he’s done ok where he’s been, but concern is he doesn’t stay anywhere for very long.

: And we’re gonna be stuck with Rob edwards… cba

: And there we have it. Rob Edwards to Middlesbrough confirmed

: Alot of Boro fans asking to support the new manager… I can support Edwards and hope he smashed it however…… it’s not a forward step from the board and I don’t see what differences he will make to performances personally. Like our football it’s another sideways pass #Boro

: Well think that means Edwards is on his way.

@mar_utb14: So Bristol City have made their move, and it’s not for Rob Edwards. I think that might give you the biggest clue as to where Boro are going. Edwards has either chose Boro, hence BCFC moving elsewhere or BCFC have opted for someone else, and Edwards only has one option.

@sarahfinn8: Rob Edwards must be feeling the love right about now… If it is him, can we at least give him a chance rather than writing him off before a ball is even kicked 🙏
