An extreme heat wave is heading to the Chicago area this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 90s for several days beginning Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The combined heat and humidity will ramp up the heat index to above 100 degrees.

The extreme heat watch is expected to take effect in Cook County at 10 a.m. Saturday through midnight Tuesday, weather officials said.

The American Red Cross urged everyone to stay hydrates, stay cool and check on others during the heat wave.

“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” Red Cross division disaster director Tony Lasher said in a statement.

“We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. You could make all the difference by sending a text, making a call or knocking on their door.”

Everyone should drink water regularly, even if they are not feeling thirsty to avoid dehydration and avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks.

Pet owners also are urged to keep closely watch their pets, especially on walks.
