The accident victim is 17 years old (as of 2025) and loves swimming and cheerleading. , but she is likely a student. Her mother, Amy, has been pushing for heightened safety in school buses through improved training for drivers and enhanced safety measures to prevent such an incident from reoccurring.

In September 2019, as Ally Rednour was dropped off by the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) bus, her backpack got caught in the door as it closed. The driver, Melinda Sanders, failed to notice and continued driving, dragging Ally for over 1,000 feet, according to CCTV footage.

Witnesses who saw what was happening tried to stop the bus unsuccessfully. One driver, Matthew Lundergan, jumped into his vehicle, drove past the bus while honking, and stopped in front of it, prompting the driver to stop.

Rednour was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital for treatment. Ally Rednour's injuries included severe abrasions to her skin and body, and permanent injuries that prompted multiple surgeries. The Grade 1 student also suffered from PTSD. (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Ally was discharged from the hospital after about 48 hours. She underwent counselling, physical therapy, and multiple surgeries. She first discussed the matter publicly in 2021 in an interview with Focus.

Melinda Sanders was suspended without pay to allow investigations. During the civil trial, fellow Jefferson County Public School bus drivers pointed out that Sanders broke protocol and did not follow the set procedures for bus drivers.

In her statement, Driver Katrina Ferral cited,

I think it’s horrible. You watch them get off the bus, you close the door. When they’re away from the bus, close the door, you look in that mirror and you watch them. They have to be 10 feet away before you pull off.

According to video footage, Melinda ran over a stop sign and allowed an older student to stand up while the bus was moving. Sanders was fired by the district after the court determined she did not watch as Ally got off the bus as required. She also lost her bus driver's license.

In 2021, Rednour's family and the Travellers Indemnity Company, representing Jefferson County Public School bus, reached a settlement worth $4.8 million in a cash-structured settlement. According to Courier Journal, Ally's family lawyer, Bo Bolus, stated,

I'm pleased that the family is pleased. The mother is a wonderful person and Ally is a daffodil.
