Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia, known for her stints on television, recently made her debut in Punjabi cinema with the action entertainer Shaunki Sardar as a leading lady. Directed by Dheeraj Kedarnath Rattan, it stars Babbu Maan and Guru Randhawa as male leads. In an exclusive chat with , Nimrit said that she is pleased by the reactions she is getting for the film.

EXCLUSIVE: Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia on her Punjabi film debut Shaunki Sardar, “Once you feel proud of your work, opinions of others don’t matter”

“Whether it’s audience or critics or the industry, the response has been very good,” she said. “The biggest happiness is that when you work in a new industry with big names and manage to leave a mark of your own; that is a challenge. I am just feeling very good that I was able to do that successfully.”

Nimrit pointed out that Shaunki Sardar can’t be labelled as just an action film. “I was wanting to be a part of this film because, as you said, it has action,” she said. “But if you see the film, you will realize it also has the flavours of rom-com, drama, action, suspense, thriller, etc, which are nicely balanced. So, I am happy to be a part of a film which is not just one track. At the end of the day, you should feel proud that you did such work. Once this happens, the opinions of others don’t matter (laughs).”

When asked about the experience of working with prominent names like Babbu Maan and Guru Randhawa, Nimrit said that they didn’t let her feel that she is entering a new industry. “They were very welcoming and warm. I developed a good friendship with Guru. We all bonded over the film’s music. Even with someone like Babbu Mann who is so senior… It was an environment where people are ready to push you. At times, a team might not involve you in different stages. But here, they made me a part of the poster, trailer, promotions, etc. This happens only when your co-stars are secure,” said the actress.

Box office is very vital for action entertainers like Shaunki Sardar. But Nimrit said that she doesn’t think much about it beyond a point. “I have realized that every film has its fate,” she said. “I won’t say that I didn’t think about box office. I do. We do check numbers at various places. There is surely that curiosity. But as a newcomer, I feel I should not take that pressure upon me. It’s a tricky area. If later after doing a lot of work I start thinking about it, then it makes more sense. But at this stage, I feel I shouldn’t think much about it.”

Nimrit got her big break in Hindi TV with the Colors show Choti Sarrdaarni. She didn’t even play the titular character but also got a chance to play a double role of Meher and Seher. Recalling the show, she said, “In life, if you get the right people and opportunities, you become able to identity your potential. I would give full credit for this to the producers and channel that they saw such a potential in me. They, at least, gave me an opportunity. Of course, after that hum bhi peechhe hatne walon mein se nahin hain. Jab mauka mila hai toh sixer hi denge (laughs). This has been my attitude in life.”

Nimrit revealed that doing this show helped her in some way in Shaunki Sardar as well. “I got so much love for Choti Sarrdaarni,” she said. “A lot of Punjabis, whether in Punjab or overseas, gave a lot love. Somehow, this recall value was there for this film (Shaunki Sardar). Although the show ended in 2022, people still had that recall value and associate me with Choti Sarrdaarni. This makes me understand that it surely had an impact.”

Speaking about her upcoming projects, Nimrit said, “I have a web show that will hopefully release in October or November. There is a Hindi film that will go on floors in December. There is another Hindi film that should release in the first quarter of next year.”
