In an exclusive chat with Lights, Camera, Podcast, John Abraham shared insights into his latest film, The Diplomat, while also reminiscing about his long-standing camaraderie with Akshay Kumar. The duo, known for their impeccable comic timing and on-screen chemistry, last appeared together in Housefull 2 (2012), with Akshay making a cameo in John’s Dishoom in 2016.

When asked about the possibility of a sequel to Desi Boyz (2011), John expressed his keen interest in revisiting the franchise, along with another hit comedy, Garam Masala (2005).

“I want to do Garam Masala 2 and Desi Boyz 2,” John revealed. “I would love to do both of those films because Akshay and I have a beautiful equation. What people don’t realize is that a lot of what we do together is unscripted. Whether it’s Housefull 2, Desi Boyz, or Garam Masala, our camaraderie is unique. There aren’t two actors in the industry today who share the kind of physicality and chemistry that Akshay and I have.”

John also hinted at something being in the works, saying, “Just getting back and doing a comedy would be great fun. I’m dying to do it, and we’ll cook up something. Something’s cooking up.”

Beyond their on-screen magic, John and Akshay share a strong personal bond. Talking about their friendship, John shared, “We speak to each other on each other’s birthdays. We sing for each other. So, that’s the best part. I think he’s a better singer than I am, and we’re both really bad. But we stay in touch—maybe once every two or three months, we just pick up the phone and talk, without any agenda.”

Reflecting on Akshay Kumar’s long-standing career and disciplined approach to work, John called him a “movie-making machine.” “Akshay thinks differently, and he believes that every day should be a workday. He’s a workhorse. But what I respect about him the most is his punctuality. He’s never late, which is fantastic, especially at his age, to be consistently putting in those hours and staying disciplined. He’s super fit—not just in terms of how he looks, but his overall lifestyle. His fitness translates into his discipline, and I have immense respect for that.”

John also stated the importance of professionalism in the industry, stating, “As actors, we’re not doing anyone a favor by showing up. We work with a team that helps us perform and look a certain way, and Akshay’s discipline and commitment are truly commendable.”

With John’s enthusiasm for reuniting with Akshay on screen, fans can only hope that Desi Boyz 2 or Garam Masala 2 materializes soon. Until then, audiences can look forward to seeing John in The Diplomat, while Akshay continues his streak of diverse film projects.
