Ex-PGMOL chief: FA inquiry as Osmajic accused of racism against Hannibal in PNE v Burnley

Early in the second half of that game, play was stopped for several minutes, with Burnley midfielder Hannibal visibly upset over a comment made to him by Preston striker Milutin Osmajic.

After referee Andrew Kitchen held discussions with players and staff from both clubs, play was eventually resumed, while both players were substituted before full-time.

In the aftermath of the game, Hannibal posted a statement on X alleging he had been racially abused during the match.

I will not be silent about what happened today.
I will always call out racism whenever I hear or see it.
That is the only way we change as a sport and a society.
I am a strong person but nobody should have to experience this disgusting abuse on the pitch.

Burnley also issued a statement on social media pledging their support to their support to their player, confirming a comment from Osmajic was reported to the officials both before and after the game.

CLUB STATEMENT

Burnley Football Club is aware of an alleged comment made to Hannibal by Milutin Osmajic during our game against Preston North End which was reported to officials both during and after the game.

In response, Preston posted a statement clarifying their opposition to any form of racism, also stating that Osmajic has refuted the allegation made against him.

Now, Hackett has detailed what might come next as the authorities take action to deal with this allegation.

After being asked how the footballing bodies will respond to the allegation against Osmajic made by Hannibal, the former referee told :

“The Football Association will hold an enquiry which is likely to be convened at a special disciplinary hearing.

“The players, match officials and club officials will be called to give evidence. The FA take a strong stance on safeguarding issues and will deal with this in a sensitive manner.

There is no room in our game or in society for any act of racism. I watched the reaction of the player and how upset he was. The referee acted in a firm and correct manner.

Burnley are currently third in the Championship table, while Preston are 15th in the table.
