EV/AV Report: Minister of Transportation halts Tesla rebate requests; while Rivian announces hands-free driving in second generation vehicles

In this weekly electric and autonomous vehicle report, the Canadian Minister of Transportation, Chrystia Freeland announced halts to Tesla rebate requests; while Rivian has revealed future hands-free driving capabilities for its second generation vehicles.

Last Tuesday, Canada’s Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland announced the decision to freeze $43 million worth of rebate payments to Tesla.

This decision is related to a recent report from the automaker indicating sales of over 8,000 vehicles in just three days across only four stores.

These records were ultimately deemed impossible as in order to make these sales, employees would have had to sell approximately two cars per minute for three straight days.

In an official statement, Freeland noted that in freezing the automaker’s rebates claim, the government will be fully examining each claim to determine its validity.

“No payments will be made until we are confident that the claims are valid,” stated Freeland.

“I also directed my department to change the eligibility criteria for future iZEV programs to ensure that Tesla vehicles will not be eligible for incentives so long as the illegitimate and illegal US tariffs are imposed against Canada,” Freeland concluded.

Rivian has announced that it is adding hands-free highway driving to its second generation R1S and R1T vehicles via a software update.

Referred to as “Enhanced Highway Assist,” the new software will reportedly allow owners to “take their hands off the wheel for extended periods of time when engaged on compatible highways, as long as they’re paying attention to the road,” said the automaker in an official release.

The company will also be enabling a “Rally” mode in the vehicles’ drive mode selector.

The option will be available for all Dual-Motor R1S with the Performance Pack.
