An emergency road closure has been put in place in Torquay due to "a potentially unstable slope supporting the highway".

Torbay Council said the closure on Ilsham Marine Drive was likely to be in place for several weeks.

It said "a small void and surface fractures" had appeared in the road last weekend.

The local authority apologised for the disruption, adding safety was "of paramount concern".

The council said more than 100 properties on Ilsham Marine Drive and connecting roads would need to access and exit the road from the top of Ilsham Road, at the Kents Cavern end, as opposed to the lower connection near Meadfoot Beach.

A council spokesperson said South West Water was on-site and had started to bypass and repair a fractured public sewer pipe.
