Embarrassment is a major character in Disney•Pixar's 2024 animated feature film Inside Out 2. He is one of the new emotions and the eighth inside Riley Andersen's mind.
- Shy and decidedly quiet, Embarrassment is ready to flop onto the Headquarters console at the first sight of social awkwardness. Embarrassment is quiet to be sure and uses his hoodie as a built-in hiding place. He's a gentle giant, and unfortunately for him, he wants to hide but he's hard to miss.
Embarrassment, as his name states, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of self-consciousness, bashfulness, shame and humiliation. He is shown to be very shy, nervous and skittish around the other emotions and doesn't necessarily have much speaking dialogue due to his timid nature. When interacting with someone else, Embarrassment is very awkward and always fails to respond to a greeting properly (like answering a handshake with a fist bump) and gets easily flustered when receiving any kind of attention even if it's positive (such as Sadness smiling at him or everyone looking at him when he spoke for the first time). Whenever his awkwardness reaches a very high level he can't handle, he hides himself by closing his hoodie around his head, leaving only his big nose out. Embarrassment also can't take second-hand embarrassing situations and he cringes while slamming his nose on the console or in some cases faints. His job is to respond to when Riley does anything socially unacceptable or awkward, suppress said behavior and keeps her humble.
Embarrassment also takes up the role as the muscle of the new emotions as he apprehends Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all at once when Anxiety stages a coup d'état to take over Riley while imprisoning the first generation of emotions, showing that Embarrassment, due to his shyness, is easily influenced by others. But despite this, he is not above to see when something is wrong, as he is the first of the new emotions to perceive how Anxiety is being harmful to Riley, showing a more sensitive and compassionate side to him. This leads him to secretly help Sadness after finding her when she managed to sneak back up to Headquarters, proceeding to hide her from the others, help Joy to project positive thoughts into Riley to help her sleep and also help Sadness to bring Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust along with the old Sense of Self.
Embarrassment is the one that stands out the most due to his enormous size, and he is the biggest out of all the Emotions; around the same size as Bing Bong, who is also pink. He has bright pink skin, small pink eyes, a very huge, rounded nose in proportion to the size of his head, magenta pink hair, and slightly reddened cheeks. His wardrobe consists of a light magenta hooded sweater with a drawstring, purple jeans, and red sneakers with white soles. His nose and cheeks usually blush dark red whenever he gets nervous.
In the book Go To Sleep, Anxiety!, Embarrassment is shown to be wearing a fluffy bright pink, bear-themed onesie, and a matching magenta-colored blanket with a white bear head symbol.
Embarrassment first appears during the part where Anxiety was introduced in Emotion Headquarters, where she explains to Joy that he is shy as well as describing him of not being a talker much. As Joy tries to welcome him, he refuses to interact positively with her, which he covers his head with his jacket. Later when Coach Roberts tells the hockey players to put their phones away during work, Embarrassment presses a button on the console, causing Riley to react embarrassed. During Riley's conversation with the Fire Hawks at the bleachers, Embarrassment finds himself lying on the console, which Sadness tries to calm him down.
After a frantic argument between Joy and Anxiety over the Sense of Self which the latter sends to the Dump, Embarrassment grabs the Emotions - Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust and places them in a jar, ejecting them from Headquarters. He later follows Anxiety alongside Ennui and Envy into the Back of the Mind, with Envy curious of Anxiety's concept of building the way she wanted to see Riley alone. After Riley wakes up, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy return to Headquarters exhausted while Anxiety is devising ahead for Riley's plans and Envy suggesting to Anxiety to ask Val lots of questions.
Embarrassment is then present in other situations like when Envy is put in charge of the console and the discussion between Anxiety and Envy who later lies on the console to make Riley embarrassed. When Sadness finds herself back at Headquarters via tube, Embarrassment, Anxiety, and Envy scatter across the pile of memory orbs to distract them while Ennui causes Riley to talk sarcastically saying that she likes the band, Get Up and Glow. Embarrassment later helps Anxiety send the anxious memory orbs to the Back of the Mind in a plan for her to help Riley be herself again, which she notices a piece of broccoli from the Stream of Consciousness floating by.
While Anxiety is discussing a scenario to the Mind Workers, Embarrassment approaches Sadness and gives her a pile of books and as he stares at her, he refuses to introduce himself to her and then returns to Anxiety devising a scenario to ruin Riley's life. Embarrassment and Envy are later present noticing Joy sabotaging Anxiety's plans to ruin Riley's life. As Riley enters Coach Roberts' office, Embarrassment, Anxiety, and Envy fearfully react that Riley would be caught just before Sadness makes Riley cry as a form of distracting the trio. As Riley opens Roberts' notebook and sees the note "Not ready yet", Embarrassment, Envy, and Anxiety notice that they have one day left but not before Anxiety unleashes a storm of ideas as she commands Embarrassment and Envy to give her ideas - one of them being a big idea to be used to make Riley's life even more miserable by causing the Headquarters to fade into orange coloration.
During this moment after Joy retrieves the Sense of Self, a determined Embarrassment helps Sadness lower the tubes to send Joy and the other Emotions back into Headquarters, only for the tubes to be dismantled. Later when Anxiety puts too much pressure on controlling Riley, Embarrassment, Envy, Sadness, and Ennui notice what Anxiety is doing, causing the four emotions to be blown by the pressure and attempt to pull the anxious Sense of Self out of the slot but not before Joy scolds Anxiety for ruining Riley's life and then places the positive Sense of Self on the slot, saving Riley's life. Embarrassment and the rest of the emotions reunite with Joy altogether but not before Riley reconciles with her friends and then scores a goal in hockey, impressing Joy and the other emotions.
In the aftermath, Embarrassment (who lowered down his hood) suddenly speaks, telling them about Riley's determination in taking a test. Joy tells the other emotions to look at Embarrassment, but not before he becomes embarrassed at first and then becomes determined in looking at Riley's positive life again.
