Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan Cast in David Fincher's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Follow-Up

A sequel to Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" is in development, set to explore the further adventures of Brad Pitt's character, Cliff Booth. David Fincher will direct the film from a script penned by Tarantino himself. The project, currently untitled, is being developed for Netflix, which will produce and release the movie, continuing Fincher's collaboration with the streaming giant. Initial reports also mentioned Sony Pictures Releasing in connection with Fincher's next project, though Netflix's role as producer and distributor for this specific sequel is now emphasized, with The Playlist first revealing the Fincher-Tarantino collaboration for a Netflix follow-up.

The cast is expanding with Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki recently signing on. While their specific roles remain under wraps, Caan previously collaborated with Brad Pitt on the "Ocean's Eleven" trilogy. Debicki is known for her award-winning performance in Netflix's "The Crown" and James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, along with other notable projects such as Steve McQueen's "Widows," Christopher Nolan's "Tenet," "The Cloverfield Paradox," and Guy Ritchie's "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." Sources suggest Debicki might play a bar owner and operator of a mud wrestling establishment or another role described as a "trophy wife." What's On Netflix had previously reported Debicki's casting.

Scott Caan, son of the late James Caan, brings a diverse background to the project. Before his acting career, he was involved in the West Coast rap community as a roadie for Cypress Hill and later started his own rap group, The Whooliganz. His acting credits include "Boiler Room," "Gone In 60 Seconds," and the Tony Scott-directed "Enemy of The State," in addition to his comedic role alongside Pitt in Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's" movies.

Details about the plot and the decade in which the film is set are being closely guarded, with one source describing the production as "more secretive than Star Wars." This project marks a rare occasion where a Tarantino-penned script, serving as a follow-up to one of his directed films, will be helmed by another director. Tarantino, famously protective of his written works and with a known desire to retire after his tenth film, reportedly set this script aside, possibly to ensure a sequel wouldn't be his final feature. Brad Pitt is said to have helped in the transition of creative leadership for the movie.

David Fincher has an established relationship with Netflix, which produced and released his past two films, "Mank" (2020) and "The Killer" (2023), as well as his television show "Mindhunter." Questions still remain regarding whether Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, or any other actors from the original "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" will make an appearance, or if the movie will utilize any of the fictional histories Tarantino created for characters like Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth.

The collaboration is particularly noteworthy given Tarantino's past vocal distaste for streaming movies, making his involvement with a Netflix-produced film an intriguing development. Production for the Cliff Booth-centered sequel is reportedly aiming for a July start date, which may lead to more story details, such as the time period or further cast involvement, coming to light. Despite being produced by a streaming service, there is hope the project will receive a wide theatrical release.

Rumors, highlighted by What’s On Netflix, also suggest Aldis Hodge ("Cross," "Straight Outta Compton") is being considered for the role of "a former NFL football player turned actor," although this casting has not yet been confirmed by major trade reports. With many roles expected to be filled, anticipation is high for this unprecedented sequel, offering film fans a unique chance to experience a Tarantino script through David Fincher's distinct directorial lens.
