Edo: NMA advocates inclusive approach in passing health bill

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Edo State branch on Wednesday made a case for the association to be carried along by the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) as critical healthcare stakeholders in the bill establishing the Edo Health Care Regulation and Monitoring Agency.

The branch made the appeal in a statement in Benin signed by its Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale.

Dr. Oseghale said the Edo State House of Assembly, as a matter of urgency, should involve healthcare stakeholders in the bill establishing the Edo Health Care Regulation and Monitoring Agency.

He added that the NMA had previously written to the Assembly on the need for stakeholders’ involvement, but lamented that “we are still awaiting a response. It is worth noting that our affiliate, the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, Edo State branch, had previously engaged the State House of Assembly on the need for stakeholders’ involvement in the passage of this bill.

“We commend Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo’s healthcare improvement initiative and offer our expertise.

“Collaboration will yield a more effective healthcare system, benefiting professionals and patients. A bill passed without stakeholder input may harm medical practice.

“Our health care system is not currently the best. Policies passed in a rush, and without the input of stakeholders, would make it worse.

“Our appeal prioritises patient protection, and we kindly insist because Edo State patients are worth it. We look forward to working together to elevate Edo State’s healthcare sector,” Oseghale said.
