Dumsor Levy is a betrayal of trust - Miracles Aboagye

Published 11 hours ago2 minute read

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticised the newly approved Dumsor Levy, calling it a betrayal of the people’s trust.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 7 June, Aboagye lashed out at the Mahama government over the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which adds a GH¢1 per litre charge on petroleum products.

“It is a betrayal of trust,” he said. “The situation we find ourselves in is simply a clueless, everlasting incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts who have simply scammed their way into government.”

The levy is meant to help pay off Ghana’s growing energy sector debt. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who pushed the bill through Parliament under a certificate of urgency, said the debt stood at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025. He added that US$3.7 billion is needed to clear the arrears, and another US$1.2 billion to buy fuel for thermal plants.

But the Minority in Parliament has hit back, describing the bill as a “predatory tax” that could take about GH¢5.7 billion a year from Ghanaians already struggling with the high cost of living. They have also criticised the fast-tracked process, saying it lacked transparency and proper consultation.

They are calling for greater accountability and a full review of the plan.
