The companies are utilizing the new Wavebag envelopes to provide protection for consumer goods including beauty products, sunglasses, and pharmaceuticals during transportation. The Wavebag replaces Matas’s previous plastic bubble wrap packaging and is lined with padding comprised of corrugated cardboard to safeguard the brand’s consumer items from shocks and vibrations.

Brian Gøbel Poulsen, director of Supply Chain & Operations at Matas, says: “The Wavebag is an excellent alternative to our previous bubble wrap packaging solution and our customers are responding very positively. The envelopes are lightweight and easy to dispose of in recycling collections. In addition, we are assured that our products are well-protected and will arrive safely.”

In January, DS Smith announced its TapeBack solution designed to eliminate the need for single-use plastic tear strips in e-commerce packaging, using one glue strip for two e-commerce shipments. It has a return strip allowing consumers to reuse the original packaging for returns, minimizing the need for additional materials.

Later in the month the company teamed up with V. Roubis to develop fibre-based e-commerce packaging for three sets of existing juice products produced in glass bottles. The new packaging is comprised of fibre-based corrugated cardboard, said to have a ‘robust casing’ and a ‘luxurious’ look and feel.

A set of guidelines for e-commerce packaging was released by the Singapore Manufacturing Federation, Singapore Post, and the National Environment Agency’s Alliance for Action on Packaging Waste Reduction for the E-Commerce Sector in March, hoped to guide businesses into rethinking their e-commerce packaging for environmental benefits. In line with Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan, the guidelines seek to help stakeholders across the value chain manage their packaging materials responsibly and cut down on waste.
