Sammi Awuku expresses confidence in Bawumia as NPP's best hope for the 2028 election

The Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has expressed strong confidence in former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) best bet for the 2028 presidential election.

Awuku's statement comes amid growing speculation about who will lead the NPP in the highly anticipated 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 19, he praised the former Vice President for his exceptional leadership during challenging times, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic meltdown.

"I believe that Dr Bawumia presents us with a perfect opportunity to win in 2028," Awuku asserted.

He has gained a lot of support within the party and many believe he has strong leadership qualities and the vision necessary to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.

"Some of us are of the firm belief that amid the difficulties we faced as a government over the last four years — including the post-COVID, economic turmoil, the global shocks and all — Bawumia did a good job," he added.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on June 20, 2025, Awuku's endorsement strengthens Bawumia's candidacy for the NPP’s flagbearership race.

He cited Bawumia's resilience, leadership qualities, and integrity as key reasons for his unwavering support.

"He stood in the gap for the NPP, and I believe in his personal achievement, character, and integrity he exhibited during his tenure as vice president under the previous government," Awuku added.

Awuku's endorsement adds to the growing calls for him to contest the upcoming flagbearer race and eventually lead the NPP in the 2028 election.
