Zebilla MP Criticizes Effectiveness of NPP's 'One Village One Dam' Project in Northern Ghana

Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, the Member of Parliament for Zebilla, has strongly criticized the efficacy and sustainability of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government's 'One Village One Dam' initiative. During an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom, the MP asserted that the majority of the dams constructed under the program are proving ineffective, especially when it comes to supporting irrigation during the critical dry season in northern Ghana. This region faces escalating challenges from climate change, which further exacerbates threats to food security, making reliable water sources crucial for agricultural sustenance.

According to MP Ndebilla, the 'One Village One Dam' initiative failed to adequately address the fundamental challenges faced by farmers in northern communities, specifically their lack of consistent access to water during prolonged periods of drought. He emphasized that many of these dams were akin to simple 'dug-outs,' which dry up rapidly, often within a month of the rainy season concluding. He even paraphrased a former Special Initiatives Minister who suggested that the allocated funds of GHS 250,000 were insufficient to construct any truly 'meaningful' or sustainable dams.

Despite the shortcomings of the previous initiative, MP Ndebilla offered an assurance that the current government is actively implementing measures to enhance irrigation infrastructure. These efforts include the provision of mechanised boreholes in various farming communities. The aim of these new interventions is to facilitate year-round farming activities, thereby significantly strengthening food security across the nation and providing farmers with the dependable water access they desperately need.
