Digital innovation meets regional security: How Owoade assists ECOWAS strengthen peace through technology
In an era defined by complex security challenges and growing demand for intergovernmental coordination, a new generation of digital professionals is emerging—armed with the expertise to reshape how institutions communicate, collaborate, and respond to threats.
One of the most notable examples of this transformational leadership is that of Oluwayemisi A. Owoade, whose work with Cr8tify Enterprises Ltd, in partnership with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union, has been credited with advancing peace and security across West Africa.
In 2020, ECOWAS launched a flagship initiative titled the “ECOWAS–EU Support for Regional Peace, Security, and Stability” project, a multimillion-dollar programme aimed at promoting long-term stability and institutional effectiveness among its fifteen member states. To implement the programme’s communication and visibility strategy, ECOWAS commissioned Cr8tify Enterprises Ltd, a performance-based digital marketing agency. But behind the scenes, the project’s success hinged largely on one digital strategist: Oluwayemisi A. Owoade.
As Digital Transformation Lead, Owoade was responsible for spearheading a range of high-impact interventions—from designing ECOWAS’s internal digital communication framework to executing large-scale staff training programs across countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal. Her approach integrated data-driven analytics, strategic messaging, and cross-border knowledge-sharing, ensuring that ECOWAS institutions could operate with greater transparency and precision.
“We needed a digital system that could do more than just share information. We needed platforms that could build trust, ensure accountability, and reinforce peace messaging across diverse cultural and linguistic boundaries,” said one ECOWAS official. “Yemisi brought that vision to life.”
Among the most praised outcomes of her contribution was the creation of a centralized digital training toolkit used to enhance the technical skills of over 200 ECOWAS staff members. The toolkit featured real-time dashboards, digitised interdepartmental coordination workflows, and provided platforms for rapid information dissemination during security events.
The initiative also led to a 600% surge in citizen engagement on ECOWAS digital platforms. Social media visibility, media relations, and regional campaign efforts—spanning video, infographics, and multilingual content—were overseen under Owoade’s strategic guidance. These tools successfully elevated regional awareness around peacebuilding, civil society participation, and institutional accountability.
“Her work created ripple effects—improving internal systems while also connecting institutions with the citizens they serve,” said Captain Martins Avaan, President of Raymart Aviation and a corporate stakeholder in the aviation-security sector who had previously collaborated with Owoade on cross-sector digitalization initiatives.
As the ECOWAS-EU Regional Peace and Security Project continues to deliver lasting impact across West Africa, the international development and technology communities are taking note of Owoade’s role as a visionary leader in digital peace architecture. Her ability to fuse innovation with social progress reinforces the idea that technology, when deployed with purpose, can be a catalyst for regional harmony and global advancement.
