Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Powdered Sugar?
We’ve all been there: You’ve got your apron on, you’re ready to start baking, and you reach for your bag of powdered sugar only to discover you’re left with a lackluster amount. The next time you find yourself in this predicament, don’t worry—you can make your own powdered sugar at home!
Using only two staple ingredients and a food processor, you can create powdered sugar in just a few minutes (no running to the store required). Our Senior Food Editor Makinze Gore walks us through exactly how:
The best part of this hack, says Gore, is that you most likely already have the ingredients on hand; all you need are granulated sugar and cornstarch. For every 1 c. of granulated sugar, you’ll need 1 tbsp. of cornstarch.
Add both ingredients to a food processor and blend until you achieve a fine mixture that resembles powdered sugar. This should only take a couple of minutes, but keep in mind that the longer it blends, the finer it will get! “I recommend letting it go for a while, as long as you can, so you can get the finest powdered sugar possible,” Gore advises.
Now that you have this hack, you’ll never need to run out of powdered sugar! Looking for what to do with it? Sprinkle it on top of your powdered donuts or French toast, make homemade whipped cream, or use it to make icing for your cinnamon rolls or cheese Danish.
