Details of Deceased Air India Cabin Crew Member Publicized After Crash

The city of Ahmedabad, India, was plunged into sorrow following the tragic crash of an Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, shortly after its takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The ill-fated aircraft, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom with 242 people on board, resulted in the devastating loss of 241 lives, with only one survivor. The incident has led to widespread mourning and profound grief across the nation, particularly impacting the families of the deceased crew members and passengers.
Among those who perished was Irfan Samir Shaikh, a 22-year-old cabin crew member hailing from Sant Tukaram Nagar in Pimpri Chinchwad. His body was identified among the deceased, confirming the worst fears of the Shaikh family, who were thrown into mourning. Relatives, including Irfan's uncle Firoz Shaikh, described him as "a bright, young boy, full of dreams," lamenting that these aspirations were tragically cut short by the disaster. The family traveled to Ahmedabad to claim his body, but faced challenges and requested immediate assistance with the process, a plea highlighted by publisher Rahil Mohammed on social media, who had shared Irfan's Air India ID card to facilitate identification and aid.
Another young life lost was Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam, a 21-year-old air hostess on the same flight. Her father, Nandesh Kumar Sharma, shared heart-wrenching details of her last conversation. Just hours before the fatal crash, around 11:30 am, Nganthoi had called her elder sister to inform her about her flight to London, stating she wouldn't be able to call for the next few days and would get in touch after her return on June 15. This conversation, her father noted, "ended up being her last call to us." Nganthoi had started her career as an air hostess in 2023 at the young age of 19, having been unexpectedly selected during an interview she attended with friends. Her father expressed pride in her securing a job with a good company, envisioning a stable future for her.
The tragedy also claimed the life of Akash Patni, a teenage boy who was resting near his family's tea stall when the crash occurred. His mother, Sita, survived the incident with injuries and is currently in the ICU, unaware of her son’s death just meters away from her. The overwhelming sorrow extended beyond the immediate families, with people across social media platforms expressing their condolences and prayers for the victims and their loved ones. Comments ranged from prayers for the souls of the deceased, especially the "brave" crew members, to expressions of profound sadness and wishes for strength and patience for the bereaved families. Air India's owners have reportedly committed to providing compensation to the families of the victims, though the immense personal loss remains immeasurable.
The devastating Air India plane crash serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the deep impact such tragedies have on communities. The stories of Irfan Samir Shaikh and Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam, both young individuals with promising futures, underscore the human cost of the disaster. Their families, along with countless others, grapple with unimaginable grief, forever marked by the events of that tragic day in Ahmedabad.
