Denied money, engineering dropout kills father, stabs sister in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: A 25-year-old engineering dropout allegedly killed his father and stabbed his sister at their Nirnaynagar residence in the early hours of Friday, police said. The accused, Dilip Meghwal, attacked his father Durgaram with a sharp weapon after the latter refused to give him money.

When Dilip's sister Taruna tried to intervene and save their father, he turned on her, inflicting injuries so severe that the knife broke during the assault and got lodged above her temple. Assistant commissioner of police (B Division) H M Kansagra said that Dilip was arrested after the attack. According to the complaint filed by Dilip's younger brother Nikhil, the family had been dealing with Dilip's persistent demands for money.

Dilip, who studied mechanical engineering at Arya College in Jaipur but failed to complete his degree due to frequent academic failures, had recently joined a small-scale industry in Naranpura, earning Rs 10,000 a month.

The attack occurred around 5am while the family members were sleeping after having dinner. Durgaram and Dilip slept in the hall on the first floor. Relatives from Rajasthan who had come for medical treatment were also staying at the house.

"Around 5am, my father started screaming for help. My mother and other family members rushed to the first floor and found my father injured and sitting with support. When I inquired about the incident, he said that my elder brother Dilip suddenly attacked him with a knife, intending to kill him, and inflicted injuries to his chest, back and other parts of his body. My father said that Dilip frequently demanded money from him, and when he refused, Dilip attacked him," Nikhil stated in the complaint.

The complainant said his father had previously scolded Dilip for this behaviour, which led to the attack. Dilip also injured Taruna with a knife when she intervened to save Durgaram, the complaint states. Durgaram was declared dead by emergency responders of 108 service. Taruna remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery. Vadaj police have registered a case and are investigating.
