Deaths in Police Custody Spark Controversy

The Kogi State Police Command has refuted a viral video on social media that alleged the killing of a bus driver by police officers at a checkpoint along Okene road. The video, posted by Oma Amina TV, claimed that Danjuma Sule, a bus driver from Kogi State, was fatally shot by police personnel. However, the police assert that the video is false, misleading, and intended to cause unnecessary panic. SP William Ovye Aya, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, stated that the incident portrayed in the video did not occur in the state and dates back to March 12, 2025. The police criticized the lack of specific details in the video, suggesting that the content was fabricated to stir fear among residents. The command has urged the public to disregard the video and assured them of their safety.

In Homa Bay County, a family is seeking justice following the mysterious death of their 40-year-old son, Timon Otieno, who died in a police cell after being arrested for allegedly vandalizing security lights at Wang’apala Secondary School. His father, John Ogwang’ said Otieno was found dead inside the cell of Othoro Police Station in Rachuonyo East Sub-county on Friday. Police officers claimed that Otieno committed suicide, but his family doubts this narrative, citing injuries on his body that suggest a possible assault. Harun Otieno, the brother of the deceased, also stated that the injuries on Otieno's body and the narrative of suicide were not adding up, while Dominic Otieno, another brother, expressed the family's sadness and their hope that Timon would return home after the criminal justice system.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers were investigating the case and that action would be taken if any crime of commission or omission were discovered. Otieno’s body has been moved to Jawabu Funeral Home for an autopsy. The case has raised concerns about police conduct, and the family is pleading for justice. This death is part of a growing concern over police brutality and misconduct in Kenya, where numerous reports highlight the use of excessive force by security personnel. Despite widespread documentation, accountability remains scarce.

In a separate incident, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating a case of assault involving a woman, Jane Pariwat, allegedly beaten by a police officer in Narok. Pariwat claimed that the officer admitted to being paid by her estranged husband's lover to carry out the assault. IPOA has vowed to hold the officer accountable if found guilty.
