In a media release, West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd., which owns the Madsen Mine, said an employee working underground was fatally injured on Monday morning. The company has voluntarily suspended operations at the mine, and says it's working closely with local and provincial authorities.
The company said an investigation and comprehensive review are underway.
"The thoughts of management are with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident," the company stated.
In a statement to CBC News, an Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development spokesperson said a worker was struck by equipment, and an inspector has been assigned.
No further details have yet been provided.
