Dawn Staley Breaks Down What Gamecocks Must Fix Before Facing Indiana
After the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team's massive win over the Tennessee Titans, head coach Dawn Staley isn't taking anything for granted. She's already thinking strategy for their upcoming March Madness game against the Indiana Hoosiers, and considering the competition with caution.
In an interview with ESPN immediately after their win, Staley mentioned weaknesses her team will need to address before facing the Hoosiers.
"We've certainly got to ... control the pace of the game," Staley said. "And then ... their ability to penetrate...is paramount. So for us, we've got to disrupt... We certainly have to disrupt from a defensive standpoint. And then, we can't have 16 turnovers... We can't turn the ball over. And then our bench and our depth has to be in character with what they've done all season long."
The Gamecocks beat Tennessee Tech 108 to 48, for an impressive start to their NCAA Tournament competition. Freshman Joyce Edwards scored 22 points total, leading the team to a massive victory. And MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 15 points. This was the third time this season that the Gamecocks reached 100 points in a game.
But their next March Madness competitor, No. 9 seed Indiana, may be tougher.
The last time the two teams met up was for the 2024 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, and the Gamecocks won in a close 79 to 75.
For March Madness 2025, the teams will be playing on Sunday, March 23, at a time that's still to be decided. They'll be playing at the Colonial Life Arena.
