Dagbon Overlord Endorses Mahama's Leadership and Policies in Ghana
His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, the Overlord of Dagbon, has consistently hailed President John Mahama for a series of commendable decisions and actions taken by his administration. During a courtesy visit to the President on Friday, June 13, the traditional leader, speaking through Dr Jacob Mahama, highlighted several key areas where President Mahama has demonstrated prudent and effective leadership, reflecting a strong commitment to national development and good governance.
One of the significant commendations from the Yaa Naa was directed at President Mahama's pledge to run a lean and efficient government. Described as a hallmark of prudent leadership, the slim structure of Mahama’s administration reflects a deliberate commitment to cutting waste, reducing redundancy, and maximizing resource allocation for national development. The Yaa Naa specifically praised the leaner cabinet, which strengthens efficiency and ensures resources are directed where most needed. This decision fulfills President Mahama’s pre-election promise to appoint no more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers, a stark contrast to the expanding size of past administrations, and has been widely applauded as a bold step towards restoring fiscal discipline and public confidence.
Furthermore, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II expressed unwavering support for President John Mahama’s transformative vision for Ghana. Through Dr Jacob Mahama, the traditional leader assured President Mahama of his undivided commitment to collaborate closely in pursuit of national development. He emphasized the importance of traditional leaders working alongside the government to harness the collective energies of the youth, leveraging Ghana's rich cultural heritage and traditional wisdom. President Mahama, in turn, affirmed his administration's commitment not to sideline traditional authorities, promising to prioritize them in decision-making and the country's developmental quest. He also noted that traditional authorities would benefit from fiscal support, including funding for the renovation of palaces, with the Dagbon Palace specifically included.
The Overlord also lauded President Mahama for his relentless efforts leading to a significant appreciation in the value of the cedi. The traditional leader underscored that a strengthened cedi would bolster both household budgets and the wider economy. He specifically highlighted the drastic drop in the dollar ratio from GH₵17 to GH₵11 in less than six months as a remarkable achievement, indicative of prudent economic management. Recent data confirms the Ghanaian cedi trading at approximately GH₵10.25 to the US dollar in interbank transactions, marking its strongest position in years. This recovery signifies a strong reversal from previous depreciation trends, boosting investor confidence and stability, particularly for import-dependent sectors, and is expected to ease the cost of imported goods and reduce inflationary pressures.
Finally, President Mahama received commendation for introducing a code of conduct for all his appointees, which the Yaa Naa described as a bold testament to his unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption. This directive sets a strong ethical tone for governance, reinforcing the need for integrity and patriotism in public service. The code, issued shortly after cabinet formation, outlines strict standards of behavior for ministers, deputy ministers, and other public officials, covering aspects like avoiding conflicts of interest and refraining from personal gain from public office. Government appointees have signed pledges to uphold the code, with clear sanctions for violations, an approach widely praised as proactive in restoring public trust and deepening democratic accountability.
