Cumberland School Band Teacher Resigns After Investigation Into Field Trip Incident
A Cumberland school band teacher formally resigned from their position following an investigation into an incident during a field trip.
The individual in question was identified as Michael Feroce, who is alleged to have spent some time in the hotel room where several female students stayed. School Committee Chair Amy Vogel said they had already started the process of drafting the band director's formal recommendation to be terminated from his teaching position.
The development comes as Feroce is facing allegations of spending quite some time with the female students late at night while he was supervising their school trip to New York over Memorial Day weekend.
Vogel added that while Feroce's presence in the hotel room appeared to be consensual and no evidence of improper physical contact was found, the band director's decision to go into the room at that time reflected conduct that the superintendent found "unacceptable."
After the incident, the band director was placed on paid administrative leave while officials conducted an official investigation that found additional "so-called" ethical digressions, according to WJAR.
Vogel noted that the investigation into the case found that the school band director enlisted several students to help him work on household tasks at his residence. Many members of the public have voiced out their opinions, including former Cumberland chorus director Janita Ducharme.
She said that what happened with Feroce could have and should have been avoided. Ducharme said that there were previous signs of poor judgment calls by the band director, specifically about student safety, that were reported to the administration.
Superintendent Philip Thornton declined to provide any additional information regarding the case before a special meeting is held, as he called it a "personnel matter." Requests for comment via the number listed for Feroce were not returned, WPRI reported.
Jason Dean, a school committee member from Ward 5, said that he first found out about the incident on May 29, shortly before the official investigation. On the other hand, Cumberland Police Chief Matthew Benson confirmed that his personnel are not involved in the matter.
Benson noted that he would have to defer school matters to the superintendent himself, noting that they only handle criminal matters and cases that are within their jurisdiction. During the special meeting on Wednesday, one parent spoke out about the issue.
They said that their stepson was on the band trip, noting that he found out about the matter from their child and not from the school, as per MSN.
