Justice Pinheiro, who presided over the case, also adjourned the hearing of the case until March 7, when all pending applications related to the matter will be heard.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered that all members of the Lagos State House of Assembly be joined as parties in the lawsuit filed by the ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his impeachment from office.

Justice Pinheiro, who presided over the case, also adjourned the hearing of the case until March 7, when all pending applications related to the matter will be heard.

Obasa filed a suit against Hon. Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker and 34 other members of the House after he was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, by at least 36 lawmakers over alleged corruption.

Following his impeachment, Meranda was installed as the Speaker of the House. However, Obasa has insisted that he remains the Speaker of the House, saying that his impeachment did not follow due process.

Obasa’s application, dated February 12, 2025, was filed by his legal counsel, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN).

In court on Friday, Speaker Mojisola Meranda and the House were represented by a team of senior lawyers, including lead counsel Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), alongside other legal heavyweights such as Olu Daramola (SAN), Femi Falana (SAN), Muiz Banire (SAN), Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Dada Awosika (SAN), Dayo Amokaye (SAN), Mofe Oyetibo (SAN), Olumide Oyewole, and Wunmi Okeremi.

Also, Olu Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika (SAN) represented other interested parties who sought the court approval to be joined in the suit.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that at least 29 members of the Assembly who backed Obasa’s removal were in court for the hearing of the case.

Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country. However, he has since rejected his removal and is now seeking legal redress.

In an application dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Fashanu (SAN), Obasa is asking the court to nullify his removal, arguing that due process was not followed.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned what it described as an invasion by Obasa and a few loyalists in an attempt to reconvene a plenary session on Thursday.

Speaking with journalists after the court proceedings, the House spokesman, Hon. Steve Ogundipe, described Obasa’s move as unconstitutional, insisting that Obasa no longer holds authority over the Assembly.

Ogundipe reiterated his earlier statement where he said, “The Lagos State House of Assembly wishes to bring to the attention of Lagosians, Nigerians, and the global community an incident that occurred on Thursday, involving an unsanctioned attempt to convene a plenary session by the former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, alongside three members.”
