What stood out on Sunday at Salt River Fields:

Making his fourth start of the spring, Burnes fired four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five. His results so far this spring have been nothing short of fantastic: one run in 9 1/3 innings with two walks and 13 strikeouts. Burnes is pleased with the way things have progressed so far. “I think kind of the last piece was pairing both the cutter command with the spin and we were able to do that today,” he said. “Now it’s just about getting built up to where we want to be and continue to kind of work on tweaking things a little here and there.” His spring has been so good that he actually took a positive out of an inning that didn’t go as planned. After the fourth inning began with a walk and a single, he was able to work out of the jam without allowing a run. “You definitely don’t want to go through a completely clean spring training and never get that feeling when you get into the season and you haven’t done it before,” Burnes said. “It’s good to have some of those higher-stress innings.”

The Diamondbacks led 4-0 entering the fifth but blew the game open in the bottom of the inning, scoring 10 times — an outburst punctuated by a grand slam from DH Caleb Roberts, who entered the game as a pinch-runner earlier in the inning. The Diamondbacks collected nine hits and two walks in the inning, including doubles by frontline players 3B Eugenio Suarez and RF Randal Grichuk. It was Grichuk’s second extra-base hit of the day after he homered off RHP Nathan Eovaldi in the fourth inning.

Herrera was involved in a minor collision at home plate in the top of the sixth inning, but the initial report suggests the injury is not overly serious. He left with what is being called “right wrist soreness.” “Everything looks OK, just soreness,” bench coach Jeff Banister said. “But we’ll reevaluate him in the morning.” On the flip side of the injury front, LF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. returned to the lineup on Sunday, his first game action since departing Wednesday’s contest with hamstring discomfort.

After falling on Saturday, the Diamondbacks prevailed, 7-5, over the Athletics on Sunday at Las Vegas Ballpark. SS Geraldo Perdomo reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks and DH Ketel Marte and 1B Josh Naylor each had a single and a walk. 2B Demetrio Crisantes, one of the club’s top prospects, laced an RBI double to left-center field in the seventh inning.

Diamondbacks RHP John Curtiss vs. Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, 1:05 p.m., Camelback Ranch.
