The announcement, made in a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday, March 13, 2025, cited constitutional provisions as the basis for the decision.

According to the statement, President Mahama acted in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, in consultation with the Council of State, to effect the change.

COP Yohunu, a seasoned officer with over four decades of experience in the Ghana Police Service, takes over the reins of the Service at a critical time.

His appointment comes with high expectations, as he is tasked with spearheading the modernization and transformation of the Police Service to meet contemporary security challenges.

The outgoing IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, whose tenure has been marked by both commendation and controversy, leaves office under circumstances that have sparked widespread speculation.

While the Presidency’s statement did not provide specific reasons for his removal, sources close to the government suggest that the decision was influenced by the need for fresh leadership to drive the Police Service’s reform agenda.
