Cold Spring Harbor cruises into state girls lacrosse semis - Newsday
WESTCHESTER — The Cold Spring Harbor girls lacrosse team’s main focus each day is controlling the controllable. Though it could not control the addition of a regional championship game on its path to the state championships, having to change buses on the way, or the on-and-off rain at Lakeland High School on Saturday afternoon, there was one thing it could control: its effort.
Cold Spring Harbor defeated Section I’s Pleasantville, 21-5, in the state Class D regional girls lacrosse final. The defending state champion Seahawks (17-3) will face Section III's South Jefferson (19-1) in a state semifinal on Friday at SUNY Cortland.
“Finding things we’re able to control keeps us grounded in a way,” senior Mackenzie McGraw said. “[On Saturday], it was definitely our energy and building off each other’s energy.”
Cold Spring Harbor used that energy to turn a 3-3 first-quarter score into a 16-3 lead by the end of the third. During that span, Kelly Callaghan tallied three of her five assists and Maggie Spehr scored three of her four goals.
“It could have been nerves in that first quarter,” Callaghan said. “Even though we’ve been to the state championships before, this is a game that’s just not familiar for us, so it took some time to adjust.”
Ruby Spielberger scored four goals, Ryan Reynolds had three goals and one assist and Olivia Mulada had two goals and two assists. Maya Soskin made seven saves.
“Once we started forcing those turnovers on defense, that’s what really got the engine rolling,” coach Danielle Castellane said. “There was so much energy on the defensive end, which made our offense completely confident to keep the gas pedal down.”
“We all trust each other so much,” Callaghan said. “When I get the ball and I’m open, my teammates trust me to, and if I’m looking to feed, I know I can give it to anyone to score.”
Callaghan and McGraw, two of 13 seniors on the Cold Spring Harbor roster, are looking for their season to end with a state champion medal around their necks.
“As seniors, we’re definitely more motivated, especially since we did it last year,” McGraw said. “This was just one step on the way, and we’re ready to finish off our careers with another state championship.”
