Coastal areas stock up on essentials, prepare flood centres & call fishermen back from sea

Digha & Sagar Island: Local authorities have initiated emergency preparedness measures across coastal regions of Bengal as meteorological forecasts predict heavy rainfall and possible cyclonic conditions in the coming days.

In Digha, East Midnapore, the district administration issued early warnings through loudspeaker announcements on Tuesday afternoon. The district disaster management department confirmed their readiness while DDMO Mrityunjay Haldar urged citizens to remain vigilant without panicking. A dedicated control room has been established and can be reached at 03228-262728.Drawing from past experiences with cyclones Amphan and Yaas, the East Midnapore administration implemented enhanced precautionary measures in coastal areas.

The Ramnagar 1 block administration issued specific warnings for Digha and nearby beach areas. Fishermen were recalled from deep-sea operations, while coastal residents were instructed to secure important documents and keep emergency equipment charged.

In South 24 Parganas, the administration mobilized quick response teams across all areas. Particular attention is being paid to embankment surveillance in Namkhana, Sagar, and Gosaba blocks.

Officials are preparing flood centres and schools while stockpiling essential supplies. Sagar BDO Kanaiya Kumar highlighted the establishment of local control rooms and emphasised vigilance during the expected heavy rainfall period from the 27th to the 30th, with predictions of up to 20 cm precipitation. Namkhana BDMO Rupam Dutta noted that while sporadic storms of 40-50 km/h are expected, the primary concern is heavy rainfall. The block prepared 52 flood centres and schools, with ongoing embankment repairs.

Gosaba BDO Biswarup Biswas confirmed the readiness of 19 flood centres, with additional school facilities available. The block established 14 GP control rooms alongside the main control room.
