Co-wife dispute turns deadly as woman stabs rival to death in Katsina

A 23-year-old housewife, Rabi’a Labaran, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her senior co-wife, Zainab Lawal, 30, to death in Daura Local Council of Katsina State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday night, May 24, was reportedly triggered by a misunderstanding between the two women. Police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued yesterday. He disclosed that the deceased was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, where she was pronounced dead by the medical doctor on duty.

“A tragic incident occurred behind Dadi Primary School, Sabon Gari Area of Daura town, Daura Council, when a domestic dispute between co-wives was suspected to have escalated into a fatal confrontation.

“On May 24, 2025, at about 11:00 p.m., a report was received at the Sabon Gari Division through one Nasir Yusuf, the husband, that he had returned home from the market and found his first wife, namely, Zainab Lawal, 30, lying in a pool of blood; she had been stabbed multiple times with a knife.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) quickly led a team of operatives to the scene and subsequently rushed the victim to Federal Medical Centre Daura for medical attention, where she was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

“During the investigation, her co-wife, Rabi’a Labaran, 23, of the same address, was arrested in connection with the offence, where she confessed to the commission of the offence. She stated that a misunderstanding with the deceased led to a scuffle and the tragic incident. Investigation is ongoing,” Aliyu said.

The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, called on members of the public to shun acts of domestic violence and to seek legal means for resolving disputes.
