Chicago weather: Heat Advisory for area, Extreme Heat Warning for Cook County, heat index in 100s - NewsBreak

The Chicago area is bracing for several days of extreme heat starting Saturday, the first full day of summer.

The Chicago weather forecast includes a Heat Advisory for the entire area and an Extreme Heat Warning for Cook County Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures soared into the 90s on Saturday. The heat index is expected to reach 100-105 degrees on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, ABC7 meteorologists said.

A National Weather Service Extreme Heat Warning went into effect for Cook County at 10 a.m. Friday, and will expire at midnight Tuesday.

There is also a Heat Advisory for most of the Chicago area.

The heat is so extreme that it is impact Amtrak Train service on Saturday.

Amtrak trains traveling between Joliet and St. Louis may be up to 90 minutes delayed due to heat-related speed restrictions between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

However, Pride Fest organizers in Northalsted said they are prepared to handle the heat this weekend.

The two-day street festival is a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ life, culture, and community. It is located on Halsted Street, between Addison and Grace, and has a long list of musicians who are set to perform, this weekend.

"Hydrate or die-drate, as they say it. Stay hydrated. Get in the shade. Wear a hat, sunscreen. All that," said Pride Fest attendee Jessika Zijzemans.

"I'm just drinking a lot of water. CTA was giving out these free koozies right outside the entrance, so I got one of those to keep it cool. And yeah, just trying to stay in the shade," added Adam Zuiker, who also attended the festival. "It's especially important to be out here and just support, you know, all of be an ally to this whole community."

The first day of Pride Fest wrapped up at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Other events also bearing the heat this weekend.

People came out to learn the importance of healthy lifestyles at the Community FitFest at St. Bernard Hospital.

And in Little Village, organizers hosted the kickoff to this year's soccer season, celebrating the Guerreras FC, an all-girls soccer program.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of ways to cool down around the city.

Starting Saturday, the city's 50 outdoor pools will be open seven days a week.

Chicago pools opened on Saturday, just in time for an extreme heat wave with heat indexes in the 100s this weekend.

Beaches have also been open. The Chicago Park District said they are fully staffed with lifeguards, and they are reminding everyone that swimming is allowed 11 a.m. to 7p.m.

The city will also open cooling centers, which include Garfield Center, Chicago Park District locations, public libraries, city colleges and police districts. Anyone who doesn't have air conditions are encouraged to visit one of the locations.

Keeping pets safe during Chicago heat wave

The Office of Emergency Management is warning that the extreme temperatures could cause heat related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

For those who plan on spending time in the heat, the city's health commissioner advised people to keep cool by applying ice or wet towels to their necks, wrists, armpits and groin areas.

City leaders said they will also be checking on those who are unhoused and need a place to stay. People were also asked to check on neighbors and those who are elderly during the dangerous heat.

Officials also warned pet owners to regularly check on their furry friends.
