Charlton Athletic Rewards Manager Nathan Jones with New Five-Year Deal Post-Promotion
Nathan Jones has committed his future to Charlton Athletic by signing a new five-year contract, extending his stay at The Valley until the summer of 2030. This significant development underscores the club's confidence in Jones's leadership and vision.
The contract extension comes shortly after Jones successfully guided Charlton Athletic back to the Championship, ending their five-year spell in League One. This promotion was secured with a memorable victory over Leyton Orient in the play-off final at Wembley. The club moved swiftly to secure Jones, especially after fending off interest from managerless Cardiff City, who had made several approaches to hire him. Charlton's decision to offer a new deal, despite Jones having three years remaining on his previous contract, highlights their determination to retain him.
Since joining Charlton in February 2024, Nathan Jones has made a remarkable impact. He initially steered the club clear of relegation troubles in the previous season and then masterminded their promotion campaign in the current season, which saw them finish fourth in League One before their play-off triumph.
Expressing his satisfaction, Jones stated, "I'm very proud and delighted. I still had three years left but for the club to come to me and want to continue that journey meant a lot to me because it's a club that I love. We've just taken one big step, but that's only one big step, we still have a long way to go to achieve our goals and I'm glad that I'll continue to work towards that."
Charlton chairman Gavin Carter praised Jones's influence, saying, "We have a really cohesive group forming at Charlton — from the players and coaching staff to the wider team behind the scenes and, of course, our supporters. Nathan has been a key part of that unity and our success on the pitch this season means we are ahead of schedule in our long-term planning for the club. Nathan understands the values of this club and shares our ambition for where we want to go. We’re thrilled to have him on board for the long-term."
James Rodwell, the club’s managing director, also commended Jones: "Nathan has done an incredible job since returning to the club last year. His leadership has been crucial in developing a culture and structure that has enabled us to progress. His vision, energy and commitment to the club are clear to see, and we’re delighted he’ll be leading us forward. This long-term commitment enables us to plan, creates stability and allows us to develop a strategy that can only benefit the football club."
Looking ahead after the play-off victory, Jones emphasized the need for continuous improvement: "We have to build now. We have to improve on every single level, and then we’ll be competitive at the level we think we should be at."
Nathan Jones's managerial career also includes spells as head coach of Luton Town, Stoke City, and Southampton, bringing a wealth of experience to his role at Charlton.
