Six-year coaching veteran Kameron Murrell has been named an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Central Michigan University, Head Coach Andy Bronkema announced on Thursday.
Murrell joins the Central Michigan staff after spending the previous two years at Iona (2023-25), and two combined seasons on Tobin Anderson’s staffs at both Fairleigh Dickinson (2022-23) and his alma mater St. Thomas Aquinas (N.J.) (2021-22). He also worked two years as a graduate assistant at Memphis (2019-21).
“Kam came highly recommended from the basketball circles I am closest to,” Bronkema said. “During the interview process, Kam aligned with our vision every step of the way. He brings NCAA Division I experience, West and East Coast connections, and a fresh perspective. Kam’s passion for the game is described best by looking at his coaching career, starting in volunteer and graduate assistant roles, and climbing up the ladder.”
“When you come up in coaching the way Kam has, you gain experience and knowledge in all facets of a program, and that well-roundedness is key. He and his wife SJ, who is a daughter of a coach, fits all the way around.”
Murrell joins the Central Michigan coaching staff after working two seasons as an assistant coach at Iona, where the Gaels finished 17-17 overall and 12-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in 2024-25 and 16-17 overall and 10-10 in 2023-24.
In 2022-23, he helped lead Fairleigh Dickinson to the Northeast Conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and two wins, including a First Four victory over Texas Southern and just the second-ever No. 16-seed-over-a-No. 1 seed win in tournament history when the Knights took down Purdue. The Knights finished the 2022-23 season with a 21-16 overall record before losing to Florida Atlantic in the Round of 32.
In 2021-22 STAC finished with a 28-5 overall record and an appearance in the 2022 NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament Sweet Sixteen. Under Anderson, Murrell has served as a recruiter, an academic advisor and was responsible for scouting reports, travel, video coordination, skill development, strength and conditioning.
After concluding his career as a student-athlete, Murrell served as a graduate assistant for two years at the University of Memphis, under head coach Penny Hardaway, where he his duties included opponent scouting, game film coding and the creation of player personnel videos. Additionally, he collaborated with the Tigers’ analytics team to create statistical pre-game and post-game reports for coaching staff while also maintaining and monitoring the daily recruiting database for the program. The Tigers won the postseason NIT Championship in 2021.
Murrell played his final two seasons for Anderson at STAC, scoring nearly 500 points and averaging just under 10 points per game. He was named team captain as a senior and helped lead the Spartans to NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and the Sweet Sixteen in 2019. Murrell played two seasons at George Mason under head coach Dave Paulsen before transferring to STAC.
As a scholastic athlete, the Long Beach, California, native played a postgraduate season at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida following a career at Long Beach Poly.
Murrell earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from St. Thomas Aquinas in 2019 and a master’s degree in Sports and Hospitality from Memphis in 2021.
