Celebrities Break 'No Phone' Rule at Met Gala 2025

The 2025 Met Gala, themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" with a "Tailored for You" dress code, saw numerous celebrities breaking the event's strict "no phones, no photography, no social media" rule. Despite Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour's known preference for a phone-free environment, many guests couldn't resist capturing and sharing moments from inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5.

Megan Thee Stallion was among the most flagrant rule-breakers, using her "Hottie Cam" to film herself and other celebrities, including Angel Reese and Doechii, trying the hors d'oeuvres. In one video, Megan admitted, "We're not supposed to have our phones," as Tracee Ellis Ross jokingly told her to put it away. Other stars like Angela Bassett, Serena Williams, and Ciara also appeared in Megan's clips.

Questlove also joined in the rule-breaking, posting a bathroom selfie on Instagram with a host of celebrities including Cynthia Erivo, Ayo Edebiri, and Tracee Ellis Ross. Before taking the photo, Questlove encouraged everyone to say, "Black s--t," in honor of the night's theme.

Halle Bailey was photographed taking a selfie with Sydney Sweeney and Lisa from White Lotus, adding to the list of celebrities flouting the rules. While the Met Gala organizers had sent out an invite prohibiting guests from snapping their own photos a decade ago, the "No Selfies" guideline seems to have become more relaxed in recent years.

The museum bathroom has become an impromptu photo opportunity, with celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Billie Eilish, and Lizzo also skirting the policy in previous years. Last year, Lizzo even filmed a TikTok dance with Uma Thurman and Stella McCartney inside the lavatory, captioning it simply, "Met bathroom."

Despite the widespread rule-breaking, Anna Wintour remains a staunch traditionalist regarding phone use at the Met Gala. As former Vogue staffer Sylvana Ward Durrett noted, Wintour prefers a dinner party where people are actually speaking to each other. However, staff members are instructed to gently remind guests to put their phones away if they are being too obvious.

Other celebrities who appeared in photos and videos taken inside the event included Tyla (who took a selfie with Shakira), Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Kors, Tessa Thompson, Doja Cat, Sha’Carri Richardson, Tramell Tillman, Quinta Brunson, and Sarah Snook.
