Cavs' Kenny Atkinson Named Pro Basketball Writers Association Coach Of Year
The accolades just keep coming in for Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson after a banner regular season, his first with the team.
After being named the official NBA Coach of the Year, and the NBA Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Atkinson has picked up another honor — Pro Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year.
The award is officially called the Rudy Tomjanovich Award, named after the former star forward and championship-winning coach. Per the PBWA, the award “honors an NBA coach for his cooperation with the media and fans, as well as his excellence on the court.”
Atkinson guided the Cavaliers to a 64-18 regular-season record, the best mark in the Eastern Conference. Throughout the year, he was praised for his thoughtful, candid approach during media sessions and his willingness to share insight into the game.
This is Atkinson’s first time receiving the award.
“Kenny has always brought great candor, humility and a sense of humor to the job, and to his regular sessions with the media,” PBWA president Howard Beck said. “He’s always eager to explain the nuances of the game and to discuss the bigger issues across the league.”
J.B. Bickerstaff of the Detroit Pistons and Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves tied for second in the balloting. Other finalists included Mark Daigneault of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Billy Donovan of the Chicago Bulls.
Tomjaqnovich is a Hall of Fame coach who led the Houston Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 and was known for his professionalism and respectful dealings with the press throughout his coaching career.
The PBWA, which is made up of more than 200 writers and editors who cover the league, also presents annual honors to a player (Magic Johnson Award) and a team PR staff (Brian McIntyre Award) for their media cooperation. Under PBWA rules adopted in 2020, no individual or team may win in consecutive years.
The Cavs trail their Eastern Conference semifinal series vs. the Indiana Pacers, 3-1, with Game 5 to take place in Cleveland on Tuesday (7 p.m., TNT).
