Can a relaxing hair wash in salon cost your life? Famous neurosurgeon explains Beauty Parlour Stroke Syndrome
ET Online
. Dr Arun L Naik, a renowned neurosurgeon, recently shed light on this alarming condition in a video that’s quickly grabbing attention online. The syndrome refers to strokes caused by awkward or excessive neck extension while getting a hair wash in salon sinks. The key danger lies in how the neck is tilted back — especially for prolonged periods — putting pressure on the vertebral arteries that supply blood to the brain.

In some cases, this can significantly restrict blood flow, leading to symptoms like dizziness, blurred vision, or slurred speech. In extreme cases, it can cause a full-blown stroke.

This isn't just theory — a case from Hyderabad was reported a few years back where a 50-year-old woman experienced nausea, vomiting, and dizziness mid-shampoo, and later was diagnosed with a stroke. Dr Naik explains that the vertebral arteries are particularly vulnerable during hyperextension, and individuals with pre-existing neck or vascular issues may be at higher risk. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this.

How to stay safe?

Dr Naik shared a few tips to stay safe-

- Always ask for proper neck support using a towel or cushion
- Adjust the chair or sink height to avoid straining the neck
- If uncomfortable, take short breaks to relieve tension
- Recognise symptoms like dizziness or numbness early and act immediately
- Disclose any medical history to your stylist and consider alternate wash methods like an upright sprayer.
