PHNOM PENH -- Cambodian political activists living in Thailand say they have gone into virtual hiding out of fear of arrest or worse, despite their prime minister, Hun Manet, insisting his government was not involved in the fatal shooting last month of a former opposition party official in Bangkok.

Lim Kimya, a former member of parliament representing the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party before it was dissolved in 2017, was shot and killed in a central Bangkok park on Jan. 7. Thai and Cambodian officials arrested the alleged gunman, Thai national Ekkalak Phaenoi, the next day. But two Cambodian nationals, Pich Kimsrin and Ly Rotanakrasmey, accused of organizing the hit, remain at large.
