Caitlin Clark Uses One Word to Describe Kate Martin Before 2025 WNBA Season

Published 11 hours ago2 minute read

The 2025 WNBA season is here, and Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin are both back for Year 2. The former Iowa Hawkeyes teammates spent four seasons together in college and won several Big Ten titles before heading down separate paths last year.

Clark was taken No. 1 overall by the Indiana Fever and lived up to the hype, averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists as a rookie. Martin was picked 18th overall by the Las Vegas Aces and played sparingly, contributing 2.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game.

Just before the regular season officially tipped off, Excel Basketball—the basketball division of Excel Sports Management—shared a social media post highlighting all the WNBA players it represents.

"So back," Excel Basketball captioned the post.

Clark and Martin were both featured, and Clark took notice. She headed to the comments and left one word while tagging her former teammate.

"Dawg @katemartin," she wrote.

Martin's time with the Aces lasted only one season. She was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA expansion draft in December. She’s expected to play a bigger role as the team’s first shooting guard off the bench and log more than the 11.5 minutes she averaged last season.

In the preseason with Golden State, Martin played 18:43 but struggled—going 2-of-8 from the field and 1-of-7 from beyond the arc—finishing with eight points and three rebounds before.

Unfortunately for her, she missed the team’s second preseason game due to a right-hand injury.

Clark and Martin will face off three times in 2025, with the first meeting scheduled for June 19 in Golden State. They’ll then play in Indianapolis on July 9 before returning to the Bay Area on Aug. 31.
