Buducnost lost the previous game with a convincing 100-81 defeat against Crvena Zvezda away in the Belgrade Arena, allowing their opponent to tie the series at 1-1 and gain hope for a full comeback and a place in the ABA League final. That outcome is still not certain, as the team from Montenegro has a strong home-court advantage, but even so, Andrej Zakelj’s team will undoubtedly be under heavy pressure to avoid a negative surprise — which elimination at this stage would certainly be, considering all circumstances.

In the first game, Buducnost shot an impressive 15/30 from three-point range, while in the second they hit just 5/21 — and that alone speaks volumes about the team’s ability to outplay the opponent with a clean 2-0. The visiting team failed to properly respond to the much more aggressive play from the reigning champion and looked somewhat nervous, as evidenced by Buducnost committing a large number of unforced turnovers, which Crvena Zvezda capitalized on. Not only that, but Rasheed Sulaimon was completely neutralized — he had just two points until the final minutes, compared to 24 in the first match. McKinley Wright somehow reached 13 points, but was stuck at just one assist for most of the game. He finished with three, compared to 12 in the first encounter.

Crvena Zvezda showed they can respond in tough moments, tying the semifinal series of the regional championship at 1-1 just days after playing one of the worst games in ABA League history in Podgorica, where they lost 104-70 — a result not easily forgotten when it comes to the red-and-whites. It was clear they would be motivated, especially with Nikola Kalinic suspended for the rest of the series and the start of a potential final — all of which they used to now be in a more favorable position.

One of the most important factors in the second game was the brilliant John Brown. Although his performances had been questioned at times this season, he proved to be a high-level defender and showed that very little gets past him. His energy and smart defensive decisions sparked waves of momentum for his team. In the first quarter, Filip Petrusev and Isaiah Canaan were unstoppable, and in the second quarter, thanks to Nemanja Nedovic, Crvena Zvezda built a big lead that Buducnost realistically had no chance of overcoming.

The series is currently tied at 1-1.

The home team is at full strength, while Crvena zvezda will be without Milos Teodosic and Nikola Kalinic due to suspension, as well as Joel Bolomboy and Dejan Davidovac due to injury.

Despite the fact that the arena in Podgorica won’t be full, home court will undoubtedly be an advantage for Buducnost, especially since they’ve been playing exceptionally well in front of their fans this season. Considering that, along with the fact that this is probably the strongest Buducnost team in recent years and that Crvena Zvezda is dealing with numerous absences, Buducnost is closer to a win and a spot in the grand final.
